Health Information managers/administrators plan, develop, organize, manage and direct the medical information systems for health facilities.  Responsibilities may include training and supervising the health information staff department, developing systems for efficient and confidential recording, retention and retrieval of medical data, and compiling statistical reports from patient records for medical, administrative, legal, and research purposes. 
Health information managers/administrators work closely with health services administrators to monitor health facility spending, physician practice patterns, quality assessment, and research.  They have job titles such as health information department manager, health information system manager, data quality manager, information security manager, and may be employed as a health information instructor or a consultant. 

Areas of Specialization
Health information managers/administrators tend to be generalist in nature, but due to heightened regulations governing privacy of health records, coupled with the increasing complexity of advanced information technologies, the role of health information manager/administrator mimic information security experts.  

Work Environment
Health information managers/administrators work in office-based physician practices, nursing homes, home health agencies, mental health facilities, public health agencies, and hospitals.  Growth of managed care has created additional opportunities in HMOs, PPOs, and insurance companies, especially for those with advanced degrees in business or health administration.  Most health information managers/administrators work long hours, and if they are employed at a hospital or nursing home, they may be required to work evenings and weekends if situations come up that need addressing outside of more traditional business hours.
